Amelia's Anthology of Illustration

Compiled, designed and published by Amelia Gregory of Amelia's Magazine fame. This new book features dozens of illustrations (by a selection of up and coming illustrators) that vividly bring to life a variety of yet-to-be-implemented contraptions and technologies that could provide renewable energy in the future. The book not only showcases illustration work along with interviews and profile pieces on each of the 40 featured illustrators, but also promotes clever ideas for renewable energy-creating technologies, with explanations of these concepts too. Here are some spreads from the 264 page hardback (first edition) tome.

Turning dunes into architecture

Besides global warming, limited resources and overpopulation the world has more needs and issues that threatens people´s basic live conditions as the issue of Forced Emigration.
No political conflict or imperialist policy is pushing Sahara´s population out of their homes.
It´s their own sand who´s doing it. How to take over this uncontralable nature force?
Well Mr Larson seams to have a big solution to this big issue.

PSA - THE EASY WAY OR THE CLEVER WAY

Two recent PSA campaigns kepts me thinking yesterday. One is the Planestupid.com TV and online campaign done by Mother. Yeah the one with the polar bears getting smashed in the ground with lots of fake blood like in a gore movie. And the second is the summit on Summit campaign by Goodby Silverstein & Partners to fight the clean water crisis.

The first one chooses the easy and shortest way to impact. Do that make people really go to the URL? Honestly don´t think so. It´s beautifully shot by a great director and will win a couple of awards in Cannes, D&AD or One Show but the message itself, although based on a truth, is as useless as it can be. Easy impact had its fans in the 80´s. These are the times of the second campaing I´m about to talk to you now.
A simple idea. A groop of more or less famous people are going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya and work and update the website while climbing.
That is building a compelling experience of the Web user.
You have the feeling that you´re being part of this challenge in real time.
This is a big idea beautifully done. We´ll see the results very soon.

Emory Douglas: Colored Iconography for the Black Power

Douglas was the most prolific and persistent graphic agitator in the American Black Power movements. Douglas profoundly understood the power of images in communicating ideas. Inexpensive printing technologies, including photostats and press type, textures and patterns, made publishing a two-color heavily illustrated, weekly tabloid newspaper possible.
I personaly discovered his amazing talent by accident visiting the New Museum in New York.
Just like russian constructivism posters, this is great graphic design with a true meaning behind it. Each death of an afro-american in the any state gave birth to a martyr in Emory´s posters.
Poster that were wide spread allover the state in order to convince people to take action locally.
A national wide strategy with local targets and wonderful graphic executions. Really well thought.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

Harry Pearce and Jason Ching have designed a series of posters for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime that highlight the relative merits of drug treatment and rehabilitation around the world. The posters are a training tool specifically aimed at the Russian police, whose country has a particularly poor track record in drug treatment. The posters had to be eye-catching, easy to absorb and not reliant on language. The typographic solution built a simple world map from internationally recognised country abbreviation codes (GB, US, RU, etc). Eight variants were then designed, using colour coding and icons to provide comparative statistics around drug abuse, the incidence of HIV, Methadone and opioid maintenance therapies, and needle and syringe programmes.

The new book is out and looks like it´s going to be a gathering of the most
shocking confessions of real people´s life issues.
This anonymous messages represent a great inspiration for others who may not dare to write but are curious to know how many have been through the same experiences.
No other tool can portray so accurately the downs and ups of
a huge community at such a deep and sincere level.
Who needs therapists with such a great tool to liberate all the rotten inside one´s mind!
Who needs a dialogue? spread your shit? throw it against the fan!

Heroine - promotional trailer

A new typeface designed by Göran Söderström – Heroine. Inspired by the typeface Windsor, designed by Eleisha Pechey in 1905. Windsor is the typeface used in the titles of many Woody Allen movies. A modern interpretation of this rusty pearl is something that always have been missing in the major type libraries. But Heroine is not only an interpretation, it goes beyond that. With the addition of swashes and alternate letters in several styles it becomes very addictive. The typeface is due to be released on September 15, 2009.

The new brand identity for Guitar Hero is designed to receive a limitless number of visual treatments. This one was commissioned from Rick Valicenti of 3st.

Today, Guitar Hero releases Guitar Hero 5, setting the stage for the next evolution of Activision’s business growth: the introduction later this fall of Band Hero and DJ Hero. Technology & Poetry

How interactive emotions are gonna get?
This virtual "mirror" in combination with a great song takes us to that place where technology is not just functional but emotional. If a clueless techie guy like me, can one day generate and send to someone he cares about a customized music video like this, I wouldn´t need to invite anyone to have dinner to make her/him love me. Well... honestly, don´t think so but think about it.

Clowns or Dandies ??????

Opinions are often divided but one thing I can say after looking at the sartorialist blog, a 0.2% of people in the streets really know how to dress. It´s not even a matter of having money, it´s in most of the cases just a matter of taste. Stop saying money can´t buy taste, that´s so 5o´s,
lets say taste can do with money what Quincy Jones did with Michael Jackson´s songs: magic.

Some say that those who dress like this are superficial and are obsessed with the show off, nothing in their brains, zero depth. But wait a second, there is something bigger that´s often forgotten and is as simple as breathing. Dressing the way you like makes you closer to who you want to be. This stupid little idea makes us feel damn good!
Come on! you´re not harming anybody, you´re not trying to feel better by taking all the pills from the night club, you´re not cheating your wife with a bulldog!!!! You´re just trying to feel good with yourself. And many people don´t like what they see in their mirrors every mourning.
In some very poor countries in South Africa, people don´t earn enough money to pay one meal per day. But they manage to safe enough money to buy $400 suite! How is that possible?
Well, it´s the same phenomenon you see in Brazil where poor people starve most of the year to be able to wear a costume in February´s carnival!
It´s never just clothes over your skin.
Now lets go back to the 0.2% of people out there in the streets that do dress like the people you see in the Sartorialist. Do you still want to kick their asses?

The Eternal MoonWalk

Despite the crappy image the media is doing of the King of Pop these days, there are still genuine
tributes coming from the true fans that remind us the size of this now called legend. This chane of different public generated videos is an invitation to all of us that at least once, did the moon walk after a couple of drinks or even completely sober. This move just made any place a virtual dance floor. One day our three legged chicken will do it too.

For those of you who had the chance to watch the film and for those who doesn´t
it´s a nice little notebook with references of each one of the different locations where the
wold famous indie director uses in his last project.
A film where Jarmusch makes a demonstration of simplicity and originality.
Great example of taste for details, the framing and the art direction.
The DP for this film was Christopher Doyle, Wong Kar Wai´s director of photography.
Definitely worth watching it.

GLAZER AGAINST HUMAN ANATOMY

http://www.shots.net/video_detail_css.asp?id=44088

I still remember that radiohead video where a freaked out guy walked through a tunnel
while cars and trucks ran over him. Realism and physical damage in a dramatic context
are definitely signatures of his huge talent.
For those who read this comments and doesn´t remember here´s the link.

No respect for human anatomy definitely pays off and is still an effective formula for the spectator.
Specially in these times where bullet proof and immortal supermans are so rare in broadcast news.
Chris Cunningham made his own statement with his obscure creation Rubber Johnny.
Another way to perturb people´s minds with a more sophisticated exercise of physical violence.
